Uig Lodge is
set in a superb position overlooking the Fhorsa
River and the magnificent white sands of Uig bay,
on the west coast of Lewis, the largest of the
Outer Hebridean islands. Built in 1876 by Sir
James Matheson, the Lodge was later purchased
by Lord Leverhulme who gave it as a wedding present
to his niece. Today it is let mainly as a sporting
Lodge but it is also available for family and
large group holidays throughout the year and makes
an ideal location for those with a love of the
sea and open spaces. It stands amidst blue sea,
white sand, mountains and lochs.
It is an inspiring building which everyone who
visits the area remembers. Among many famous
people who have stayed here is Arthur Ransome,
the world-renowned author of the Swallows and
Amazons children's books (see panels).
The Lodge is well equipped and provides good
accommodation for up to 15 people, in 8 bedrooms,
with plenty of bathrooms. It can either be taken
on a self-catering basis or with the services
of an excellent cook.
